Conservation and preservation of WWII flight cap and googles
Jul
2024
-
This is a genuine WWII flight cap with goggles. The work here was preservation and conservation to arrest any further deterioration of the leather. There was a little repair work done but due to the fragility of the leather, some parts could not be repaired.
1920s Brooks Motorcycle Saddles Refurbishment
Jun
2024
-
Two 1920s vintage Brooks motorcycle saddles from the famous British brand. This job was to replace the leather which had deteriorated. The leather was wet molded, the Brooks badge embossed on, the brass Brooks badges fixed on and then dyed and sewn by hand.

Make a belt to match the straps on the boots. Change 4 buckles on the boots for nickel plated ones. Change the 4 straps on the kilt and add nickel plated buckles. Fix the shagreen belt, make loops for the cherry belt. Add holes and fix buckle on the deco belt.
Bespoke Flat Lacing for a lounge suite
Jun

-
Another unusual request: to make 20 Metres of bespoke, reinforced lacing to replace the old lacing on furniture (shown in the photos). The leather strips were cut then split down to 0.4mm thickness. A 5mm flat cotton braided cord was used to provide the reinforcement. I made a tool to roll the leather over the braid.
Bespoke Office Desk Leather Top
Jun
2024
-
An office desk bespoke fitted leather cover. Ok, this was a new build so not exactly repair and restore! This desk is just over 2m long. There is not a hide big enough to do this in one piece, hence the French seams. The cross stitches were done by hand.

Bespoke leather corset design project
May
2024
-
This project was part of a collection designed by a final year design student. The client worked with me to make and realise her design. The leather used was natural veg tanned lining leather, wet moulded, hand dyed and machine stitched. 'Intrecciato' was done on the side panels, connecting to plain panels on the front and back. The necklace strands are real leather, cut and split to size and thickness, hand dyed and braided using the 4 strand round braid pattern. The Turks head knot holds the nails in place, which can be slid up and down the tassels.

Commission to make a bracelet to customers specifications
May
2024
-
I was sent photos and the original (plastic) article with a request from the customer to replicate in leather. The customer wanted 'an exact' copy, although we did decide on a Mexican edge braid which was not on the original.

Bespoke Leather Shop Hanging Rails
May
2024
-
5 bespoke shop hanging rails. The customer supplied the leather and poles. I did samples using Baseball stitch, Cross stitch, butt stitch and straight stitch. The cross stitch was chosen. The edges of the leather were first skived, then folded and punched using a 1mm punch tool. Punching with a round punch gives a nicer look than using an awl.
Harley Davidson Sportglide custom leather livery
May
2024
-
This customer wanted the livery to match the paint design on his bike. The riders saddle and back-rest replicate the design, whilst the pillion seat and back-rest were done in red only so as not to make it look too busy. The tank and tail bibs were done in plain black and with tooling on them.

Bespoke Barrel Bag -Student Designer Project
Apr
2024
-
This bag was commissioned by a first year university design course student. I was given specifications for sizing, colour, pouches, lining and hardware. I used natural veg tanned leather and dyed it using my proprietary methods to colour the article. All straps were sewn on my walking foot industrial machine and the ends were hand sewn. The logo was tooled by hand both on the end and on the inside using two different tooling methods.

Commissioned Plaited Sofa Ties
Apr
2024
-
Sometimes I get unusual requests, like these sofa ties (something I did not know existed.) These were made from the same leather that was used to rebuild a sofa. Each strand in the plaits are 2 layers of the leather, glued back to back and plaited. I used Turks head knots to finish them off.

Briefcase sympathetic repairs and conservation
Feb
2024
-
This very old briefcase was dry and had torn stitches along one of the edges. There was also a very bad repair job, which had to be hidden. I removed the old stitching, treated the leather and re-stitched. This is a good example of a sympathetic repair.
1920s Brooks Motorcycle Saddle refurbishment
Feb
2024
-
Famous British motorbike and bicycle saddle maker since 1866! The leather was replaced by moulding and shaping the new leather. An antique dye was used to colour the leather and techniques I use to make it look antique. The leather was hand stitched with linen thread to stay in keeping with this antique item.
Leather inlay for Carlton round table
Feb
2024
-
This rather large and beautiful rotating games table got wet from rain due to a leak in the roof. The leather had discoloured and rotted. A new leather inlay was made with gold gilding around the edges provided by Ron Berry at https://www.desktopleatherlinings.co.uk/. My job was removing the old leather and laying on the new.
